Jackson County Arts Minutes Meeting June 21, 2010

The meeting started at 6:00 pm at the home of Sandy Studebaker. In attendance were Katie Morris, Carolyn Bell, Marilyn Spiker, Mary Schock, David Schock, Sandra Studebaker, Suzette McCord-Rogers, Alicia VanDerSluis, Gin Fox, and Kathleen Cobb.

Old Business
-The Glory Days Art Show held at the Courthouse was a success and we would like to continue hosting Art shows in concurrence with community events.

-Linscott Park Project- Build week Wednesday June 23-Sundy June 27. Discussed ways to help the design team- donating supplies or volunteering time.

-Continued discussion on events during fair week. Fair books and entry cards for Open Class will need to be picked up from the Extension Office at the Courthouse. We decided to look into a booth at the fair instead of a float in the parade. We would like to have custom coloring sheets designed by our artists for kids to pick up at the booth. To contribute a coloring sheet, create a line drawing with a fair theme on 8 ½ x11 inch paper, trace over the lines with marker, and either mail drawings to Katie Morris (438 Hillcrest Dr., Holton, KS 66436) or scan and email a digital copy to Gin Fox (gfox@oldhamsfarms.com, fox@holtonks.net). Coloring sheet designs need to be received by Gin Fox by July 15th. A working meeting to prepare for the fair booth will be held at Katie Morris’ house, 438 Hillcrest Dr., Holton, KS 66436, on July 12th at 6:00.

Treasurer’s Report
As of May 17, 2010, our balance was $264.28. Expenses of $25 to sponsor a prize for Fine Arts at the fair and $40 for a picket at the park were reported. $7.50 in donations were collected at our meeting. New balance is $206.78.

New Business

Winter Art Show

At our last meeting we decided to do a winter/Christmas/holiday themed art show to go along with the festivities of the Christmas kick off around the square. We are going to be using the Hutchins building on the west side of the square- our show will be open Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st as well.

Artists may bring up to two pieces for display, please bring something to display it with (stand, easel, etc.) You need to bring a printed label for each piece of art. To get a template, email jacksoncountyarts@gmail.com or make your own about 3x5 inches with Artist, Title, Medium, and NFS (Not for Sale), PUR (Price Upon Request), or just list the price. Since the building is privately owned, we will be able to offer artwork for sale. If anybody does want to buy a piece, they will have to do that directly from the artist. If the artist is there, it can happen at that point, otherwise we will just have to give contact information. If you have business cards, they could be laid out next to your artwork.

Drop off work: Friday, November 20th between 4:30 and 5:15
Show open: Friday 5:30-8:30, Saturday 10:00-2:00
Pick up work: Saturday, November 21st at 2:00

We will be serving cookies and hot apple cider. Drinks will be paid for with our treasury and we need donated cookies. Please bring a dozen or two cookies.

We need table cloths to borrow so we are looking for solid colored table cloths or sheets in black, red, or something to match our theme. If you are available to help set up Friday afternoon, we could use your help. We could also use help duing the hours that we will be open and taking down the show.

Jackson County Arts Minutes 10/19/2009

Meeting started at 6:05 with 8 members present. We started with show and tell because a couple people had to leave early. Ginnie showed a knitted piece and explained that she would be dyeing it. Kathleen showed a book that she and her daughter had written and illustrated together. Mary showed an acrylic painting. Dave showed a watercolor painting. Katie showed pictures of the murals she painted in the EUM church’s children’s wing. Jan showed a Halloween craft. Roger showed a country cupboard that he had built that is awaiting pick up.

Old Business

· We all agreed that the Fall Fest Art Show was a big success. The cold weather brought people inside and the spent a lot of time looking and discussing. We definitely filled the space. It was decided that in the future, we need to send our own press release to the Holton Recorder for better publicity of art events. (The Holton Recorder printed a very nice press release that we sent about Bryan Grove’s trunk show.) $18.12 in donations was collected.

· Trunk Show- we had 40+ attendees and everybody was very positive. Quilting on the Square paid the artist. We had no expenses and collected $76 in donations.

Treasurer’s Report

We started our last meeting with $90.84 and collected $17.66 when we passed the hat.

$76 collected at Trunk Show

Total= $184.50

New Business

· The Christmas kick-off in Holton is starting the week before Thanksgiving. 11/20. Katie Ingels will be emailed to verify the date. We discussed if it would be possible to have an art show on the square (possibly in the Hutchins building?) at that time. Other ideas would be checking on the classroom at Quilting on the Square. We think it would be a good idea to have a winter/Christmas/holiday theme. We could serve hot apple cider or something warm and cookies or doughnuts. If it is in a private building, we could charge a small commission 5-10%.

· UPDATE! Sandy Studebaker checked on the Hutchins building and it IS available November 20th and 21st. Katie is trying to work out the details for the show and everyone will be notified when things are finalized.

· Our next meeting is Monday November 16 at 6:00.

Traded ATC’s- decided that our November ATC swap theme would be “Nature.”

Adjourned at 7:00.
