August Meeting

Jackson County Arts met at 6:00 on Monday, August 16, 2010. In attendance were Katie Morris, Sandy Studebaker, Gin Fox, Fred Appelhanz, Kathleen Cobb, Sarah Devader, Mary Pfeiler, Mary Schock, David Schock, Rosalie Wilkerson, and Jan Van Meter. Sarah Devaderhosted the meeting at Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage.

Old Business

Several members entered artwork in Open Class at the Jackson County Fair and did well. The Jackson County Arts Booth won Reserve Grand Champion in Open Class. RosalieWilkerson received the 4H prize sponsored by Jackson County Arts, “A is for Art: An Abstract Alphabet” by Stephen T. Johnson. Katie Morris received the $25 prize for Open Class Fine Arts Grand Champion. It was reported that the group received thank you notes from both recipients.

New Business

October 9th is Fall Fest on the Square. Mary will call to see if the courthouse is available for an Art exhibit. If we are able to host a show, we will plan on set up and check in of artwork at 9:00 with the show open to the public from 9:30-3:00. Members will be allowed to enter two artworks labeled with Artist, Title, Medium and either NFS (not for sale) or PUR (price upon request). Members are asked to bring 2-dozen cookies for refreshments and easels available to display artwork. Artists may also bring business cards or a short biography. Fred Appelhanzwill play the dulcimer during the exhibit. You must be a member to exhibit artwork at a Jackson County Arts sponsored show. To become a member of Jackson County Arts, you may join our Facebook group, or email jacksoncountyarts@gmail.com to be added to our list, orcome to our next meeting! There are no membership fees.

Members decided to create a scarecrow and enter in the Fall Fest contest. A working meeting to complete the scarecrow will be held on Monday, September 20th at 6:00 at Jan Van Meter’s cabin. For directions, email jacksoncountyarts@gmail.com. It was also reported that Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage will be sponsoring a Fiber Fest at the Hutchins’ building on the square during Fall Fest.

Treasurer’s Report

Balance as of July 12, 2010 was $233.78. $21 in donations were collected to leave $254.78 cash on hand.

Show and Tell

David shared information on Open Class at the Kansas State Fair. For information, visit www.kansasstatefair.com. Kathleen shared information on the Topeka Art Guild’s Kansans Paint Kansas and showed two works in progress: acrylic landscape paintings from her photographs. Kathleen said that she likes to start with warm-colored under paintings.

Sandy brought a copy of Paint Works magazine with several fall and Kansas paintings. Katie shared an acrylic painting of a day lily.

Jan shared a stuffed fabric fish that she painted and displayed in arealistic manner, a hand-built teapot, and clay and fiber pieces.

Program

Mary and Sarah explained and demonstrated Zentangle drawings. Zentangles are small, abstract ink drawings that are used to enhance creativity and aid in relaxation.(www.Zentangle.com) Members tried the techniques and created Zentangles until the meeting was adjourned.
