April 2013 Art Walk!

The next Jackson County Art Walk is set for Friday, April 19, 2013, from 5-8 PM.
In an effort to streamline collecting information from artists and musicians to help pair them with businesses for the Art Walk, we have developed a short "Interest Form". Please fill out and email to the Art Walk Committee or deliver in person to Sarah's Enchanted Cottage during business hours.

Hello, Business Owners!

Last August, Jackson County Arts put on the very first Jackson County Art Walk. We had over 20 businesses and more than 35 artists and musicians participate. We estimate that at least 250 people from the community and neighboring communities were out to enjoy the Arts on our town square. We were very pleased with our first attempt and will use what we learned as we move forward on future Art Walks. We are grateful to all the businesses that showed support for the Arts in August and hope that even more will help the event grow!

We are planning the next Jackson County Art Walk for Friday, April 19, 2013 from 5:00-8:00 PM.

There are several ways in which a business can participate or support the next Jackson County Art Walk.
1.     Personally invite an artist or artists to show at your location. If you have contact with an artist, you are welcome to set up all the details and have work on display during the Art Walk.
2.     Invite a musician or musical group to perform inside or in front of your location.
3.     Host a Show- You could pick a theme and put out a “call for artists” then choose your favorites to display. You can have an “opening” during the Art Walk.
4.     Allow Jackson County Arts to set you up with an artist or musician. We have put together an “Interest Form” to collect names of interested artists and musicians so we can try to pair them with businesses. If you are interested, we can give you the contact information so that you and the artist can figure out the details for setting up.
5.     Sponsor a refreshment table or hands-on activity.

Things to think about
·      If you do set up your own artist, please let Jackson County Arts know so that we can include you on our official Art Walk list.
·      Whether or not you choose to have your storefront open during the Art Walk is up to you. If you are not able to be open, you can still participate by displaying work in your window so that it can be seen from the sidewalk or letting an artist or musician demonstrate or play in front.
·      While most of the Art Walk event will be on the town square, we are interested in other venues participating. You do not have to be located on the square to show Art.
·      If you invite an artist or musician, they do not have to be from Jackson County.
·      Jackson County Arts will be responsible for putting together an official Art Walk Map. You do not need to pay anything for this.

Supporting the Arts is good for communities and good for businesses.
Randy Cohen from Americans for the Arts compiled a list of 10 Reasons to Support the Arts in 2012 (http://blog.artsusa.org/2012/04/11/10-reasons-to-support-the-arts-in-2012-from-arts-watch/. Included in the top 10 were:

Arts are good for local merchants. The typical arts attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, not including the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, and babysitters. Non-local arts audiences (who live outside the county) spend nearly twice as much as local arts attendees ($39.96 vs. $17.42)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.
Arts are the cornerstone of tourismArts travelers are ideal tourists—they stay longer and spend more. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown annually since 2003 (17 to 24 percent), while the share attending concerts and theater performances increased five of the past seven years (13 to 17 percent since 2003).
Stronger communitiesUniversity of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.

11-19-2012 Minutes


Jackson County Arts met Monday, November 19, 2012, 6:00 PM at Sarah's Enchanted Cottage. Present were Sarah Devader, David Schock, Donna Kuti, Gin Fox, Carol Totten, Mary Schock, Linda Brownlow, Fred Appelhanz, Katie Morris, Ginnie Schirmer, Amy and Charlotte Cyphers, and Suzette McCord-Rogers. We approved the minutes from our October meeting.
Treasurer’s Report

Art Walk Committee Report- We are looking at possible dates in April, still on Fridays, including April 12, 19, and 26th. We need to see if there are any major conflicts before deciding on a date. We also worked on an application for artists and musicians. Sarah and Suzette volunteered to be liaisons to help coordinate with businesses. We will decide on a date at our January meeting.
Barn Tour- We received a thank you note from the Jackson County Historical Society for hosting the 2012 Country Living Art Contest and promoting the Barn Tour.
January 21 Meeting- We will have a baked potato bar and work on reviewing policies. Members volunteered to bring items for the dinner. Guests are welcome!

Show and Tell/Announcements- “December Treat” work due to Sarah’s by November 30th. On December 1st, Sarah’s will be offering workshops. Katie shared an announcement of a show in Topeka called “To Him be the Glory”. Find information here: http://tohimbetheglory.weebly.com/index.html David and Mary Schock each showed a winter painting. Mary also showed a sewn apron. Linda showed a motorcycle painting. Fred shared a poem called War. Katie brought photos from the Duck Stamp judging and Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Several members helped paint windows and figurines around the square for the holidays.
Program- Carol moved that we adjourn the business portion of the meeting and continue to the program. The program was led by Carol’s sister, Barbara Diggs. She taught us how to use aluminum from recycled pop cans and make an embossed three dimensional star, painted with alcohol ink.

Jackson County Arts Minutes 9/17/12


Jackson County Arts met Monday, September 17th, 6:00 pm, at Sarah’s Enchanted Cottage. Members present included Sarah Devader, Katie Morris, Donna Kuti, Carol Totten, Sandy Studebaker, Mary Schock, David Schock, Fred Appelhanz, and Ginnie Schirmer.

Old Business
Art Walk- Katie gave a report on behalf of the Art Walk committee. We had at least 250 people in attendance and received a great deal of support. We are looking at doing another Art Walk in the spring. Discussed issues that came up as far as sharing responsibilities and making decisions. We decided to develop a short application for artists interested in showing to help make decisions. We also discussed that we need to be very clear as far as what we are willing to do as a group and deadlines.
Country Living Art Contest- we received over 90 entries between the K-3rd and 4th-6th grade age groups. We choice 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and some Honorable Mentions for each age group. We hope that next year we will get some middle or high school students to enter as we want this to represent K-12. Winning artwork will be displayed at Sarah’s September 29- October 6.
Fall Fest- Sarah will get the scarecrow application and is working on the outfit. The schedule for the Fall Fest Art Show (pending approval to host at the Court House) will be
            9:00- Set up
            10:00-2:00- Open to the public
            2:00-2:15- Take down show
Members signed up for shifts to work and are asked to donate 2 dozen cookies for refreshments. Members can show up to 3 pieces of work, any medium. You must be a member to show but can join for $5 for the remainder of the year. Please label your artwork with Artist, Title, Medium, and NFS (not for sale) or PUR (Price Upon Request). Work cannot be labeled with a price. Katie suggested working on artwork or demonstrating during your shift. Fred will provide music.
Jazz Festival- 6 members were able to help with the event. All who went enjoyed it.

New Business
Art Challenge- Sarah is issuing an “Art Challenge” for the month of October. She invites artists to make work depicting their “Favorite Thing About Fall” and bring to the Prairie Meadow Art Gallery inside Sarah’s by October 3rd. Any medium is acceptable.

Show and Tell- Mary showed a painting of a spring scene with a woodpecker. Fred shared a self-portrait in poem form. David showed a 1 point perspective sunset painting. Carol showed a pastel drawing. Sarah said her show and tell was the Jazz festival sign on the southwest corner of the square. Ginnie showed an in-progress knitting project made with her spun yarn.

The first ever Jackson County Art Walk was a big success! We had at least 250 people in attendance and the weather was perfect. We are planning another Art Walk for the spring and will announce more information as it becomes available.
