September Minutes

We started our meeting at 6:00 with a few newcomers. It was decided to start using a basic agenda for every meeting: Old Business, Treasurer’s Report, New Business, Show and Tell, Artist Trading Card Swap.
• Katie Morris reminded members of Bryan Grove’s trunk show Saturday, October 3rd at 1:00 at Quilting on the Square. Mark at Quilting on the Square has generously decided to pay the artists fees so you can attend absolutely free!
• Mary Schock gave a report on the Fall Fest art show progress and we helped make some decisions. Fall Fest is Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Artists of any age can bring up to 5 pieces to show inside the Courthouse. Any medium is allowed- please bring whatever is needed to display your piece. There will be some table space available and tabletop easels work great for small work. If your piece is 3D, it should either fit on the table, be displayed from the floor, or bring a stand for the piece.

Please bring a typed label for each piece about 3x5 inches with the following information:Artist NameTitle of WorkMediumDesignate either PUR (price upon request) or NFS (not for sale)

You may also choose to bring up to a 1 page Artist Bio to display next to your work.

Drop off time is between 9:00 and 9:30, Show open to the public from 10:00-4:00.
Members are requested to bring 2-dozen cookies.

The Schocks used Rogers scarecrow demonstration to make a scarecrow to direct

Minutes

August 17th Jackson County Arts Meeting MinutesWe met at Sarah's on August 17th. Katie announced that Dr. Bryan Grove (retired professor of Art Education at Emporia State University and quilt artist) will be giving a trunk show at Quilting on the Square in Holton on October 3rd, 1:00. Jackson County Arts and Quilting on the Square are hosting the event. It will cost about $200 to pay for the talk and mileage so we will have a free will donation to cover the cost. Dr.Grove will be bringing 50 quilts with him and we will be able to look closely and, yes, even touch the art quilts! These are not your grandma's quilts, with untraditional materials such as barbed wire and prairie grasses sewn into them. Contact Katie Morris (catharine.morris@yahoo.com or email jacksoncountyarts@gmail.com) with any questions. You can view pictures of his quilts here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40711143@N03/

Congratulations to Kathleen Cobb, winner of a $25 prize from Jackson County Arts for her painting receiving Open Class Fine Arts Best of Show at the Jackson County Fair in July. You can view a picture of the winning painting here: http://art-exchange.com/search_result_details.aspx?ArtId=78230. Kathleen gave us a thank you card and Katie read it to the group.

We are going to start swapping Artist Trading Cards at our meetings. We picked a fall theme for the first swap. If you are interested, bring some cards (usually at least 3) to our next meeting September 21st. ATCs are miniature works of art that are traded, never sold. The main rule is that the cards must be 2.5x3.5 inches and be able to fit into a plastic sleeve. Here are some websites with more information:http://www.artjunction.org/atcs.php <---awesome

We also discussed Fall Fest and our role in it. Fall Fest is going to be October 10th on the square combining the former French Market, the chili cook off, and a scarecrow contest. There will most likely be an art show, the plans will hopefully be finalized soon. We are looking into having the show inside the courthouse. We would need people to bring easels to display the work. Kathleen, Mary, and Jan are co-chairs for the art show. If you would like to volunteer to help, please email jacksoncountyarts@gmail.com. We would need people to stay with the artwork in shifts on the day of Fall Fest. Roger showed a scarecrow armature he built and told us how to make it. He said he would try to help anybody that needed it for the scarecrow contest. We might want to enter a scarecrow as a group and individuals are encouraged to participate. There is a $7 entry fee for a scarecrow.

David gave a treasurer's report. We have $90.84 in a checking account at Holton National Bank.
